Change Default Location For Installing Applications or Softwares

WindowsAs the size of hardrives increase, more people are using partitions to seperate and store groups of files. Usually people install applications and softwares in different partitions and locations other than usual Program Files in windows. Most people who play games also keep a separate location for installing games. But in windows everything is installed by default in C:\Program Files if your window is installed in c: drive.

Every Windows whether xp,vista or windows 7 uses the C:\Program Files directory as the default base directory into which new programs are installed. However, you can change the default installation drive or directory by using a Registry hack or trick.

Run the Registry Editor (regedit) by typing regedit command at runĀ  and go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

Look for the value named ProgramFilesDir. By default, this value will be C:\Program Files. Edit the value to any valid drive or folder and windows will use that new location as the default installation directory for new programs. Now after this every time you install a new software, application or game, it will be installed in the directory or drive which you mentioned in the registry.
